If I was to make a list of the most common complaints about modern smartphones, issues related to the battery would be well clear of everything else. It appears as though most people get frustrated with the battery on their smartphone. With most users, the frustrations begin six months to a year into using the phone. It is when they start to notice the battery is not as good as they expected.
Did you just buy a brand new smartphone? Congratulations! It is the honeymoon phase, where you will love everything about the phone. But you will get into the next phase soon, where issues start to crop up. If you want to avoid battery issues, we have some tips that will help you ensure you get good battery life a year or two down the road.
- Charge the Phone Strategically
If you are planning to keep your smartphone for at least three years, you will care about battery degradation. Most phones are fine for 1.5 to 2 years. Then you can start to notice the battery holding a lesser charge than it did before. How can you avoid such an issue?
You can charge your phone strategically. It means keeping the phone between 20 percent to 80 percent whenever possible. In depth studies show that lithium ion batteries are preserved better if they remain within this use range.
If you are regularly charging your phone up to 100 percent, it is not good for the battery. Similarly, draining it down to 0 all the time is not good either. But keeping it in the 80 percent to 20 percent range is the best approach.
You could do this by purchasing a small portable charger, if you are regularly on the go. When your phone gets close to 20 percent, just connect the portable battery for 30 minutes. You will be up to 60 or 70 percent battery in no time!
- Got a Smaller iPhone? Buy an Official Battery Attachment
If you have one of the smaller iPhones, such as the iPhone 6, 6s, 7 or 8, you can buy an official battery attachment. It is a small case that you attach to your phone. It has a battery inside it. You connect the case to the phone with the lightning port, which ensures the battery on the case can be used on the phone.
With this pack, you use the battery on the case BEFORE the battery on your phone. So if you charge the case to 100 percent every day, you will be able to use all of its battery before you even touch the iPhone battery.
What this does is limit how many cycles of battery you go through on your iPhone. It is great for people who want to keep the phone for more than two or three years. Even a couple of years into using the phone with this official battery pack and you will have a practically brand new phone battery!
- Change Out the Battery Eventually
Even with preservation, you will eventually wear down your battery. Say you spent $1000 on a smartphone and want to keep it for five years. If you want it to hold the same level of charge in three or four years, you may need to swap out the battery.
Since most smartphones have internal batteries that you cannot access, it will require taking the phone to a local repair shop.
